Body Worn Cameras (BWC) Use for Non-Sworn Agencies
Posted by Michael Hill on September 4, 2024 at 11:15 amGood morning friends,
I am hoping folks can help me. I’m assessing whether the use of Body Worn Cameras is feasible for non-sworn agencies. I’m looking for any assistance in identifying pros/cons and if any institution has implemented a program successfully. Thank very much for any help or ideas.
Regards,
Mike

Before we became a sworn department at Oakwood University, I outfitted my officers with BWCs. I applied the same logic of sworn departments – transparency, accountability, officer integrity, use of force documentation, adjudication (student conduct, HR, criminal, etc.).?
Hope this information helps.

Good morning-
We implemented our BWC program during the start of the 2020 school year and two weeks later I had an officer that was accused of racially discriminatory actions because of contacting a student with corrective actions to include referral to our conduct process. If it was not for the BWC that officer would have lost their job. It has been helpful in other ways, when contacting individuals we would like to move off campus, once they know they are on video they will move with no questions asked.
The biggest down fall for me was finding something that was affordable, affordable to replace, does not require a software platform to use and was durable enough to survive officer abuse. I can confirm that they will work after being driven over by a vehicle, but not usable.
