Chief Gruber,

We were recently discussing our options on this very thing.? Ultimately we decided it was better to provide the coverage and absorb the cost rather than to risk having our campus partners not call us (usually for budget reasons) when they honestly need us there.? The university has been supportive of this approach and has replenished our special events budget when needed.

We don’t charge but much like Chief Samels we do like to at least know about events and make an assessment on whether we should have a presence at them or not. The root of our issue is that our events services does not consider our presence a value add that should be charged back to clients but rather a “free” service that should already be in place. We are working towards changing that but its a long standing business culture/practice that has not been reviewed even as the need continues to grow.?
